The Céide Fields

Walk

Recently the children from Inver National School visited the Céide Fields. The Ceide Fields is an interpretative centre where we can see evidence of farming life from 5000 years ago. We also looked at the geology, the plant life and the wildlife in the area.

Céide Fields

We went to the Céide Fields today and first we looked at the art and afterwards we went to the video room and watched a video about the bog on a big screen. Then we went to the bog and the woman showed us all different plants then she showed us all different plants. Then she showed us a iron crow that goes underground and you could feel some old walls. She showed us remains of an old house with desighns on the bricks. Then we got something to eat. I had some sausage-rolls and a drink. I sat beside Ciaran Thomas Damian Iollan and Stephen. Then we went to the top of Céide we went down the steps and then we went back to the school. Then we had a quiz about the Céide Fields.

Céide Fields .

Last Friday my class went to Ceide fields .We went up to the bog a woman came with us and she told us about the the flowers and how they found the wall. Now they find the walls by pushing a long bar down into the bog. She talked for half an hour. Their were remains of an old house there also. It was over 5 000 years old .We had something to eat in the shop and it was a good day at the Ceide fields.

 Ceide Fields

My teacher rang the Ceide Fields to see if we could go there and then she rang a person to get a bus to go to go to the Ceide Fields. We got a bus and went on a Friday. When we got there we went inside and we saw a tall tree inside and steps going to the top of the roof. There was a coffee shop there. When we were finished looking at everything a woman came and showed us around. We went down a stony road and we stopped where some flowers and weeds growing. Then the woman told us some of the names of the flowers and weeds. After a while we carried on and and we went up some steps and we got to the top the woman pulled a metal bar up from the ground. She put it back down and then she could feel the wall underneath the ground. Then she gave us all a shot at pulling the metal bar up and then putting it back down. We went back to the coffee shop and we had some food to eat and then we went up the steps and we were up on top of the roof. There are steps leading down to the ground and we went down. The bus was waiting for us and we went into the bus and then we went back to school.

Our guide Gretta showed us some sphagnum moss. We were very surprised because it held so much water. We also head some very interesting stories about the uses of sphagnum moss during Viking times (ask Gretta!) and during the war. Click on the photograph here to download a video clip. You may need Real Player 8 to view this.

 Ceide Fields
It was a windy day when we arrived at Ceide Fields. Before we entered the building Mrs Connolly took photos and we had a look at the massive cliffs When we entered the building we were greeted by the staff. First we watched a movie about Ceide Fields itself. It showed about how Ceide Fields was made and what the farmers used to grow. It also told about the man who discovered it Seamus Caulfield. After the movie an Archaeologist who worked there took us on a tour of the bog. She showed us where the walls which had been dug up were and she told us
about all the different bog plants. Then she took us further up the bog and showed us how they find walls without digging them up. What they do is they stick an iron rod down into the ground until it hits the walls. Then they put sticks into the ground to mark the walls. We were all getting hungry so we decided to go back inside to get some lunch .The meal was nice and we all had a long rest after walking. Afterwards, the same Archaeologist gave us a tour of some of the things they had dug up.They had dug up the bark of an old pine tree. They also had a stuffed clf and statues of people. At the end of the day we climbed to the top of the building and had agood look at the surrounding bog before leaving for home . It had been an
excellent day. By Kelly
