My Local Area.

My name is Mairead C. I am twelve years old. Graughill is the name of the village I live in. It is the only village in the area in which a battle was fought for tenants rights in the year 1881.It was known as the Battle of the Boreen. There was also a song composed The Battle of the Boreen.

O Brethren dear did you hear

What happened here below

In the barony of Erris

Near Inver in Mayo

The recorded feats of

other years

Are nothing when compared

To the trials and tribulations

That our natives here have shared.

The word Graughill means Glen of Blood. There are twenty-four inhabited houses in our village. There are three uninhabited houses. We have three different companies in our village comprising a Knitwear factory ,a building contractor and an agricultural contractor and plant hire. Graughill was of old a fishing village. There were once shoemakers in our village and they were caller the Greasaí. Graughill is now a mainly a farming village. Graughill is located along the coast line and at the foot of a hill called Cnoc Nancy.
