Astrid Ní Mhongáin is a traditional singer. Through an interview I did with her on Wednesday January 17, 2001, I found out a lot more things about her. I found out that she sings Sean Nós (traditional Irish songs) and Ballads (traditional English songs). She has two favourite songs, one in Irish one in English, Amhrán Na Trá Baine and Doolough. Her favourite singer is Christie Moore. She has won county and regional finals and she has also won All Ireland championships in Sean Nós and Ballads and she is currently Senior Ladies Ballads All Ireland champion. There is a lot of traditional music in her family, she got her love of singing from her father and his mother, her grandmother (RIP), and she has continued this tradition. She has sung on Irish national television and on German television. She has been recorded by many different nationalities including American and Japanese. She has sung at commemorative famine walk organised by Afri where Christie Moore and Liam Ó Maonlaí have also sung. She sang at the bicentennial celebrations of the 1798 Rebellion and she sang outside the Dáil at a demonstration organised by AfrI. She will be singing in Luxembourg on St. Patrick’s weekend as a representative of traditional Ballad singing.
