moss bog

The Bog.

The bog that we go to is not far away its just up the road in Gorthbrack Everyone in the village has there own plot. The flat bog surface is covered by grass and sedge species, deer sedge, Bog Cotton and the black Bog Rush. Hollows are covered by a characteristic layer of jelly like slime sometimes up to ten cm thick mostly in wetter areas. When this material dries in summer it forms a crisp mat. The bog has to be drained to let all the water out. If you don’t the turf would be all wet when you cut it and it would take along time to dry. The water lodges in parts of the bog and it is so wet that you are unable to drain it.
