The pupils and teachers
of Inver National School have named the integration of Information Technology
into their lives the C.E.L.T. project.
This stands for Community Empowered and Learning through Technology.
C.E.L.T. is a two-pronged initiative aiming
to transcend the rural isolation and socio-economic disadvantages of
the Inver area. It addresses the needs
of the children in the school on one hand, and the wider community on
the other.
Firstly, while the majority of the children do not have computers or
Internet access at home, at school, the children use the Internet and
Internet based collaborative projects to explore and experience life
and cultures which would otherwise be unattainable for them. They have
had
online explorations with schools in France, Australia, and the US to
name but a few. These collaborations have involved the exchange of soft
toys called Travel Buddies, the exchange of e-mail, of photographs,
local artefacts and video conferencing sessions whch can all be viewed
at from our Resources Page.Through these
collaborative projects, the children gain insight and understanding
into other cultures while displaying their own culture to their partners.
The second part of the C.E.L.T initiative
deals with the wider community. The parents of the children are encouraged
to share their global explorations with the children in the school by
sharing Internet time with their children. They also are receiving computer
training courses in the school itself and have access to the school's
computer room, which the parents themselves have renovated on a voluntary
basis. Check out their wonderful work at our IT
Room page.
