The Bog

We use turf to heat our homes. Turf is an organic fuel which we "cut"
from the gound.
In May my father started cutting turf and I
took a video of him. After the turf is cut it has to be spread and rickled .
Turf is used to
provide heat for the house . Rickled means to put the turf standing up in small
lumps. Some people buy turf instead of cutting it themselves. Cool peat briquettes
are also used to provide heat . Firelighters are used to light the fire.
When the turf is dry it is time to bring it home. In June my father gets the
tractor ready to bring down the turf. Then
there is a grive of long sods made at the house . This is done to keep
the inside turf dry. Sometimes the tractor gets stuck in the bog and we have
to get another tractor to pull it out .
During the winter it rains a lot and in Spring when we go to the bog it is wet
. Heather is a type of plant that only grows in bogs. When turf is burnt it
turns to ashes. Many of our neighbours go to the bog.
Sheep live on the side of the bog. There is a very very good view from the top
of the bog. You can sees the school, church, Inver and Gorthbrack. There are
many holes in the bog.
Turf has to be cut before bad weather comes in and has to be taken out while
it is still dry in summer.

Nuair a dhónn móin bíonn luaithreach fágtha . Téann furmhór na comharsanna chuig an bportach .
Maireann caoirigh in aice leis an bportach . Tá radharcanna áille le feicail ón bportach . Is féidir an seipéal, an scoil, Inbhear agus Gort Breac a fheiceail .
Tá peill mhora sa bportach . Is gá an mhóin a bhaint sula dtagann an droch
aimsear agus é a tharraingt amach fhad agus atá an aimsear tirim ins an Samhradh .
